Check out these time-tested strategies to help you conquer the challenges of diaper changing.

Do you have a diaper dodger? You know the kind...a baby who just won't stay still during those critical moments on the changing table? While this can be frustrating for you, rest assured it will pass. "It's usually just a phase," says Julian Orenstein, M.D., author of 365 Ways to Calm Your Crying Baby (Adams Media). "Most of the time, these changing table battles are a sign that your baby is asserting some independence."

Here are some ways you can make the experience a little less trying:

Engage your baby. Try time-tested distraction techniques like "Where is your nose?" "How big is [insert your baby's name]?" and "Where is the light?" Ask any question you can imagine to get your baby to point little fingers away from his or her bottom and into the air.

Make it a game. Play peek-a-boo by giving your baby a blanket or small towel to hold on to.

Let your baby participate. Before you begin changing a diaper, give your baby a clean wipe and ask him or her to wash fingers and face while mommy washes other areas.

Sing a song. Songs are always a good distraction, but the ones that involve finger play are ideal for you because it helps keep your baby's hands engaged. Try the classic song "Itsy Bitsy Spider."

Let your baby make music. Give your baby a musical instrument like a harmonica or a maraca so he or she can play while you do important work.

Let your baby choose the diaper. This might sound silly, since they all look the same, but it really is an effective way to calm some babies. "Offering a choice may give your baby a sense of authority and control," says Orenstein.

Try a reward system. Some children are motivated by rewards. Create a chart and every time your baby lets you change him or her without a fuss, put a sticker on the chart. When five stickers have been earned (or however many you think is reasonable), reward with a treat. Promise to let him or her watch a beloved video or nibble on a special favorite snack.
